Sounds great - How do I register ?

You can register immediately via our Customer Portal click HERE.Once you have registered you will receive an email confirming your application and once this has been reviewed and approved by our office (usually this is done within 24 hours) you will receive another email confirming you can now go ahead and register for dance classes.

That’s great – we have several adult classes each week – for different abilities and some more energetic like Highland or Tap whereas others such as Ballet and Line Dancing are gentler. We run classes for beginners so just get in touch and let’s have a chat about what would suit you best. You can always bring a friend to keep you company. And our adult classes are just pay-on-the day so no massive commitment for you.

This is a very common question and we are fortunate to offer a very wide range to dance classes even from pre-school. However, if we were to recommend just one class to start with-it would-be Ballet. This is the very foundation of dance and teaches basic skills and techniques which are required in other styles of dance so if you can master Ballet then this will stand you in good stead for your future dance choices.

We firmly believe we are the best dance school at what we do. We offer a very wide range of dance styles and we cater for pupils from 18 months old to over 70 years. We hold dance examinations at several points throughout the year, so all pupils have an opportunity to progress up the exam grades as they are ready. We stage several Dance Shows a year with all pupils from pre-school through to secondary school age being given the opportunity to perform in a professionally staged dance show.

We are a dance school with high standards and strong discipline and at the same time we care about every pupil and want them to love the experience of Dance and to enjoy their dancing with FHSD. A significant number of our pupils join us aged 3 or 4 years old and stay with FHSD for their entire dancing career until they leave secondary school progressing steadily through exam grades, picking up more dance subjects and taking part in numerous shows during their time with us. Even once they’ve left our Senior School many former pupils maintain contact and come back to watch or assist at our shows, take up a teaching role at FHSD or simply come along to our adult classes. We’re also very fortunate to have our own purpose designed dance studios in central Peebles where most of our classes and lessons take place and these are great spaces to work and create and practice.

My child is just starting her first class - does he/she need a uniform on Day one ?

No – they can wear T-shirt and leggings/shorts. You don’t need to buy the uniform until you know they will be continuing with the class. All pupils MUST have the prescribed uniform at the beginning of their second term.

Venues (1)

We have four dance studios at our complex in Peebles. Almost all our classes, workshops, private lessons and holiday dance schools all take place at FHSD Dance Studios which is our home and we are very proud of the facilities we have. The simple fact is that the Saturday class schedule is so busy for the school with over 25 separate classes and lessons on the one day we need to hire additional space to accommodate all the classes. All classes are conducted by FHSD Teachers and class assistants.

Exams (7)

No, it is not compulsory that pupils sit exams if they prefer not to. We will obviously be covering exam syllabus in their classes however they can decide not to sit the actual exam if they prefer. However, we do find that the vast majority of our pupils chose to sit the formal exams and they provide a valuable indicator of the pupil’s progress and progression.

FHSD prides itself in having an excellent track record for our pupil examinations with consistent 100% pass rate across the school every year and a very high percentage of pupils gaining the two top grades of Highly Commended and Honours. In the year 2017/8 over 80% of our pupils gained these highest possible grades of Highly Commended or Honours which we are extremely proud of. This impressive track record reflects our school philosophy of treating every pupil as an individual and assessing their own personal readiness for exams, and then ensuring they are well prepared and supported in the run up to their exam day itself.

In addition, our Dance School regularly receives Scholarship nominations from visiting examiners where they pick out outstanding candidates.

My child has other activities planned on the examination day so can I request a specific time slot for their particular exam?

No, unfortunately this is not possible. The scheduling of a school exam day is an extremely complex process and cannot be done until all the parents have booked their child in for their exams. The exam board also impose planning and scheduling constraints which need to be factored into the final exam schedule for the day. It is not possible to provide a timeslot at the point of exam registration and it is also the reason we cannot schedule exams around individual pupil’s time schedules. If they are unable to make their allocated timeslot then they will have to sit their exam at a later date.

I missed the response date for returning the examination forms. Can my child still sit the exam?

No, unfortunately they have missed this particular exam day. The exam boards require all the candidate names in advance and all the examination paperwork is completed in advance, so late entries cannot be accepted.

Do pupils need to wear uniform for exams?

Yes, they do – it is a requirement of examination board that all pupils should wear the prescribed uniform. Pupils not wearing the correct uniform will not be allowed to sit the exam on the day and will not be refunded the exam fee. Details of all uniform requirements are found on the FHSD website.

Some of the pupils in my child’s class are sitting exams and I’ve not heard about my child?

We assess each child individually and if they are not quite ready for an examination at this time then we will not put them forward. Our belief is that all children develop at different rates and we want to set them up for as big a success in exams as they are capable of achieving.

Is my child being entered for examinations ?

We will email you to let you know if they are being entered in an examination. FHSD runs several examination days throughout the year and we assess each pupil individually and will put them forward only when we believe they are ready.

Competitions (1)

No - we have chosen not to go down this route. Whilst it may sometimes work for some schools we believe it has the potential to be seen as elitist and create a ‘premier league’ and ‘junior league’ of pupils which can be divisive with only the Competition team getting the opportunities to perform. Having said that, we have many pupils who like to enter Highland and Stage competitions as individuals and the school fully supports them and offers coaching and private lessons to prepare them.

We encourage all our pupils to work hard and be the best they can be, whether that’s in class , on stage, in an exam or at a competition.

Dance Shows (2)

As a school FHSD is unusual in staging multiple dance shows each year. We stage separate dance shows for our pre-school section, two Junior School shows and two Senior School shows. In addition, we are often invited to perform at other community events in Peeblesshire. We have also staged shows at the Innerleithen Music Festival as well as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

No, pupils are not obliged to take part on our Dance Shows however we find that for the vast majority of our pupils this is a highlight of their dance year. We put a huge effort into preparing each show to be the very best it can be with great care taken over music, costumes, choreography and staging and lighting to really give our pupils a wonderful performance opportunity to show off their skills and techniques to friends and family. We will obviously be covering show choreography in classes in the run up to show time.
